Giving thrifted clothes a proper clean makes them feel brand new. Here is how to care for different fabrics.

Start With the Label

Always check care instructions first. If there is no label, treat the item gently.

General Washing

  • Wash thrifted clothing before wearing
  • Use cold water for most items to prevent shrinking and fading
  • Add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse to help remove odors

Delicate Fabrics

Wool and cashmere: Hand wash in cool water with wool wash and lay flat to dry.

Silk: Hand wash gently or dry clean. Never wring.

Rayon: Often shrinks in water. Dry cleaning is safest.

Removing Odors

  • Air items outside in the sun
  • Place in a sealed bag with baking soda overnight
  • Use an enzyme based cleaner for stubborn smells

Stains

Treat stains before washing. Oxygen bleach works well on many whites and colors. Test in a hidden spot first.

Shoes

Wipe inside with rubbing alcohol, sprinkle baking soda to absorb odor, and clean soles with a brush.

Simple Repairs

Learning to sew a button, fix a hem, and remove pills with a fabric shaver will extend the life of your finds.
